De <em>shootout<\/em> bij een afgelegen huis is een fletse versie van het imposante <em>long take<\/em> tijdens de laatste schermutselingen in laatstgenoemde film.<\/p>\n<p>Behalve halfslachtige verwijzingen naar moderne filmklassiekers (ergens aan de muur hangt ook nog een verweerde poster van A Boy And His Dog) hebben de regisserende broers Hughes niets bijzonders te melden, behalve dan dat de mensheid zelfs na een door religieuze meningsverschillen ontstane Derde Wereldoorlog zich moet blijven vastklampen aan heilige geschriften. Zonder Bijbel geen moraal. Held Eli heeft een <em>bible under his belt<\/em>, maar de film is te gewelddadig om omarmd te worden door de Evangelische Omroep.<\/p>\n<p>Bijrolspelers Tom Waits, Michael \u2018Singing Detective\u2019 Gambon en Malcolm McDowell (onvermeld in de credits!) hadden het verhaal kunnen verlevendigen, maar zijn slechts terloopse passanten (vergelijk hun bijdragen met de veel sterkere personages die Michael Caine en Danny Huston neerzetten in Children Of Men). Veel te laat in het verhaal wordt gesuggereerd dat Eli blind is, een gegeven dat met terugwerkende kracht vele vraagtekens oproept (Eli als \u00fcber-Zat\u00f4ichi?).
